Brad Workman's Exhibit, "Interim Port-au-Prince" at SAAC

Florida based photo-journalist and former News-Times photographer Brad Workman brings his exhibit, "Interim Port-au-Prince" to the galleries in September. His riveting images document the period immediately following the February 2004 Haiti Rebellion that prematurely ended President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's second term. The subsequent interim era of political unrest led to an official election on February 7, 2006, when René Garcia Préval and a 129-member Haitian Parliament were elected....... more

SAAC Board Creates Dennis James Scholarship Fund

Dennis James was beloved by family, friends, and acquaintances for his boundless spirit, unlimited generosity, refreshing sense of humor and his unwavering faith. He was known in El Dorado and beyond for his remarkable singing ability and acting talent, touching the lives of many who knew him only as a performer. A very familiar face here at SAAC, Dennis participated in countless plays, from childhood through the 2005 summer musical, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." He generously gave of his time to SAAC's fundraising group, 5th & Broadway; including their most recent production, "100 Years of Broadway" in February 2006. He also performed with innumerable church and community productions over the years.
The SAAC Board of Directors recently voted to create a scholarship fund in the name of Dennis James with the memorial monies received by SAAC and to match those donations up to $10,000. A committee has been established to set criteria for the scholarships with the hope that once the monies are endowed for a student, other arts projects in the El Dorado area can also be funded. "What better way to honor someone who has given so much to the South Arkansas Arts Center and to this community than to create a scholarship in his honor," said Gay Bechtelheimer, president of the Board of Directors.
The ad hoc committee members are Dean Inman, chairman; Mike Jacobs; Paula Reynolds; Steve Smart; and Richard Wharton. For more information, contact Dean Inman at 864-7142. Please make your donations to the Dennis James Scholarship Fund, South Arkansas Arts Center, 110 E. 5th Street, El Dorado, AR 71730.

*The mission of the South Arkansas Arts Center in serving the people of the bi-state region is to promote, bridge, facilitate and support the ideas and forms of artistic appreciation, education, ability, confidence and cooperation for all age, cultural, social and racial groups.

The South Arkansas Arts Center beleives that the arts should be basic to lifelong education - not just for children and teachers. SAAC is here for the community!

Come see an art show - come enjoy a theatre production - come be a part of the arts in South Arkansas!
